IELTS success: Your pathway to achieving higher exam scores in England

A library shot of a student concentrating hard on what she's doing on the laptop, which we'd like to think is working through some English language preparation exercises. She's jabbing her pen into her cheek which suggests she might be really thinking about what the right answer should be. Maybe she should attend ELC's exam preparation classes herself.

IELTS is the ideal choice to improve your chances of success - the qualification is accepted by thousands of organisations, places of learning and border/immigration departments around the globe.

At ELC we offer a range of great IELTS exam preparation courses that will give you the skills and knowledge to take the test, and be confident in your chances of success.

What is IELTS?: Definition

In simple terms, it is an English language test. Its full title is the International English Language Testing System, but is usually shortened to IELTS.

IELTS has been offered to students for over 30 years, with more than 4 million tests taken worldwide each year, making it the most popular English language test globally.

IELTS assesses your skills in reading, writing, listening, and speaking, and is an essential qualification if you aim to study, work, or live in a country where English is the primary language.

Students who take the IELTS test will receive a score (or points) for each of the four sections mentioned above. These four scores then create an overall ‘band’ score, between 0 and 9, with 0 being the lowest and 9 the highest possible award. Scoring a 9 shows you have expert command of the English language in all four areas of reading, writing, listening and speaking.

IELTS is an extremely valuable qualification, and shows you are highly competent with real-world English communication in all its forms.

Do I need to take an English course before the IELTS test?

It’s important to have a solid understanding of English before taking the IELTS exam. At ELC, we recommend that IELTS candidates have a CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference) level between B1 and C1+ to enrol in our preparation courses, meaning you need intermediate to advanced English skills. You must be of an intermediate to advanced skill level even before you take the exam.

If your English level doesn’t meet the requirement, ELC offers various courses to improve your skills, including General English, one-to-one tuition, and specialist subjects like Business English.

Our friendly and professional staff will help you reach the level needed for the IELTS preparation course. Our programmes cover essential skills - from basic conversation to writing, listening, and reading - boosting your confidence with English before you take the IELTS test.

Which IELTS is better, general or academic?

You have two test options: IELTS General Training or IELTS Academic. Here’s a breakdown to help you decide:

IELTS General Training - This option is ideal for professionals or students entering the job market where English is commonly used. It demonstrates to employers that you’re comfortable with English in both social and professional settings. It’s especially popular for those looking to move abroad or gain promotions.

IELTS Academic - This option is widely recognised in the academic world and shows you’re comfortable with lessons, lectures, and other academic materials. Choose IELTS Academic if you wish to study in a school or university where English is the primary language.

The IELTS test version you choose depends on your personal and professional goals and where you plan to go.

What is the best way to prepare for the IELTS?

The IELTS exam can be challenging, but here are some key tips to improve your chances of a high score:

  • Take a practice test. This helps you assess your CEFR English level and familiarise yourself with the test format. The British Council provides free practice tests for students.
  • Learn the test format and timing. Familiarise yourself with the question types, layout, and expectations for each section.
  • Immerse yourself! Try to live and work as if English is your primary language. Read, write, and speak in English daily.

  • Watch IELTS blogs and videos online, which offer free tips on reading strategies, vocabulary, and more.
  • Join a study group to practise with fellow IELTS students or people learning academic English.
  • Create a study schedule and stick to it, aiming for at least five hours per week. The British Council has provided a great one month study plan for you to use.
  • Take a course! An IELTS preparation course in the UK is perfect for students who want to successfully pass this important test.

What are some practice materials for IELTS?

Preparation is essential, and there’s a wealth of practice materials available:

  • Books: The official IELTS practice book by the British Council, called “Official IELTS Practice Materials 2,” includes test questions, examiner comments, and a DVD with test footage.
  • Apps: Many IELTS practice apps are available, including IELTS Success Exam Practice (Apple) and LearnEnglish, IELTS Practice Band 9 and IELTS Test Pro (Android).
  • British Council’s IELTS Ready: A free resource package for students with videos, apps, books, tutors, webinars, and advice from past test takers.
  • Articles: A vast number of free articles and blogs online cover topics like grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation to help improve your English.

How much time is required to prepare for the IELTS?

Most students find six to eight weeks enough to prepare for IELTS, assuming they study a minimum of five hours per week. For higher scores, many students choose to study a few hours each day.

At ELC our IELTS exam preparation courses typically run for an intensive 4 weeks, with a choice of either 25 lessons (18.75 hours) or 30 lessons (22.5 hours) per week. This should give you some idea of the level of study that is required for IELTS success.

Which country is best for IELTS preparation?

IELTS preparation courses are available in a large number of countries, so whether you live in Portugal, India or Germany there are programmes you can study to get you ready for the test. The internet has made it far easier to learn online, meaning there is no real ‘best’ country for IELTS preparation - courses are available wherever you are in the world.

However, cost is a major factor that you must take into account. Online courses are widely available, and while some seem relatively inexpensive to students in the west, they may be very costly for people from other countries. For example, one IELTS online course in Pakistan costs 32,000 rupees, or approximately 120 US dollars - this may seem like a small amount, but when you consider that the average minimum monthly pay in that country is about 20,000 rupees it means a 4 week online course becomes quite expensive.

Immersion in the language is also quite important, so students will often choose to travel to, or work online with, English-speaking organisations or places of learning. The UK, Canada, Australia and even Singapore are known for their excellent educational resources, English language schools and preparation programs. Where you choose to study, though, is often down to your own individual preferences and learning goals.

IELTS originated in the UK, and is jointly run by the British Council, IDP IELTS, and Cambridge University Press & Assessment. The United Kingdom is also the birthplace of the English language, so taking an IELTS exam in the UK is understandably popular with students. What better place to fully immerse yourself in the language, and use the excellent educational resources the UK is famous for?

At ELC we offer fantastic IELTS exam preparation courses in each of our schools at Brighton, Eastbourne and Chester, along with a comprehensive General English course that includes IELTS and Academic English modules held at our beautiful English language school in Brighton. If you are planning to take your IELTS test in the UK or online, ELC has everything you need to pass the test and obtain this important qualification.
