Ricardo is from Colombia and began the Study Year Programme (SYP) in May 2013. He will leave us at the end of February 2014. He took the time to have a chat with us and we asked him about his motivation for coming to the UK for a long-term English language course. We asked him why he chose to study English in Eastbourne.
Ricardo explained that he has been working hard in Colombia to support his family for over 20 years. After talking it over with his wife, he decided he would take a year out from working to realise his dream of learning of English. This is not the first time he has studied English as he attempted to learn English in several English language institutions in his home town. Unfortunately he never felt he was making a lot of progress and he was not able to practise enough.
Ricardo’s SYP tutor, Mitch, meets him once per month to discuss his progress. Mitch had this to say about Ricardo’s progress:
“Ricardo has made fantastic progress. He always studies hard and tries to use his English in all situations – including when he’s taking part in the social programme.”
Mitch also commented on what it has meant to Ricardo to be in Eastbourne on the Study Year Programme:
“Ricardo has told me that it has been a life-changing experience, when he goes back to Colombia his dream is to [...] open an English school for poor children.”
When he arrived his English was at a very basic level, but he now feels very confident with his English thanks to the personal care given to him from the teachers. Ricardo believes that anyone can learn to speak English if they take a few months to study at ESOE.
At the end of his course Ricardo will return to his family in Colombia and plans to make excellent use of the English skills he has acquired. We wish him all the very best!
